We’ve invited everyone to share their own thoughts and memories of Alexi Laiho, which you’ll find below. We are very grateful for our time spent as Alexi’s guitar endorsement partner, and as his friend. When Alexi passed away at the very end of 2020, we knew that many people in the world of metal music would share our feelings of sadness and loss. This thoughtful, loyal, and soft-spoken man became our great friend over the years, and any time we were able to work with him… on the design of a new signature guitar, or helping to support the release of music by his band Children of Bodom… it was a true pleasure. But more importantly, we began to appreciate Alexi not only as a premier-level guitar innovator - having won numerous awards and top reader’s poll spots for his incredible shredding - but also as a person. By 2006, Alexi had joined ESP’s exclusive roster of Signature Series artists, and right from the start, his collection of ESP and LTD signature models became some of our top sellers. His unique combination of melodic, neo-classical lead lines with pure blazing speed made him stand out like a shining beacon in a stormy sea of fellow guitarists. He was only in his early twenties at the time, but had already established himself in the underground of heavy metal as one of the most impressive players we’d seen in many years. Now we just need to wait for SleepyPsyduck to train a bit more and come back as a real rock god of Smash. In 2002, ESP got to know an up-and-coming guitar player from Finland named Markku Uula Aleksi Laiho. They probably walked out of the venue feeling like a real winner too. yet.Īlthough they ended up dropping their first set of the night 2-0, SleepyPsyduck still looked pretty competent already despite the fact that the Roy player is still clearly trying to get used to their own creation. The strum bar is actually set to be the jump button while the colored fretboard buttons are used for normals, specials, shield and grab, but unfortunately the Whammy bar doesn't do anything. SleepyPsyduck explains how and why their wild creation works If you've ever attempted to play a different video game with a Guitar Hero controller in the past, you'll know that the character would constantly try and move left, so that's not an issue here.Īfter their first set at Ignition #253, the commentators were so taken aback that they pulled SleepyPsyduck over to explain how in the hell the controller works.Īpparently they gutted the original internal parts and replaced them with a universal controller board to work on the Nintendo Switch, and then it's just kinda a matter of assigning buttons. Just look at those fingers fretting and strumming That's probably largely thanks to the player taking a few pages (or more like 8 buttons) from the Smash Box controller by modding directional buttons for both the analog and C-stick onto the body of the guitar itself. While we don't exactly foresee this kickstarting a new trend, this special guitar does seem to do the job seeing as how SleepyPsyduck was still able to perform and take some stocks at the event.
